Packing Tips for Moving

Congratulations! You have just found the perfect new place to live. Now you have to pack all of your belongings up, which can be a daunting task. Here are some tips to make the packing process a little easier and more manageable.

1.)  Don’t Put Off to Tomorrow, What Can Be Done Today

Essentially, don’t wait to do all of your packing last minute. A few weeks before moving day, start packing up boxes. Start with the things that you don’t use every day and that you won’t need in the few weeks between now and moving day. Set a goal for yourself to pack a couple of boxes a day. That way the task is more manageable and less stressful.

2.) One Room Equals One Box

When you are packing, start in one room and stay there until it is all packed up. You don’t want to mix up items from the kitchen with items from your bedroom. All items that go in the kitchen go in the same box(es), all bedroom items go in the same box(es), etc. This will make the unpacking process go a lot smoother.

3.) Clearly Label Your Boxes

On the top and sides of the boxes clearly label what is in the box. Write the room it goes in and a general description of the contents. Example: Kitchen, cutlery and cutting boards. Another tip is to label each room’s boxes with a different color so it is even easier for the movers and you to know where they go.

4.) Keep It Together

When you dismantle furniture and other things that have nuts, bolts, or screws keep them together. Put these things in a plastic baggy and tape it to the bottom of the table or whatever it is you dismantled. That way you don’t lose those in the move.

5.) Use Boxes Designed For Moving

Boxes that you get from grocery stores and other places may not be strong enough to handle the weight of what you are moving. Also, if your boxes are different shapes and sizes, it can make loading them difficult.

6.) Personally Transport Important Documents

Important documents like wills, passports, social security cards, etc. should be transported by you.

7.) Pack A First Night Bag

Have a bag of pajamas, clothes, and simple toiletries in a bag. This is especially important if you are moving with kids. That way you can be ready to go to bed and have a few of your personal comforts the first night in your new place.
