Helping Your Teen Cope With Moving

Moving away from your family home isn’t easy for anyone. But, it can be especially hard for teenagers. They feel like they are being pulled away from their social circles and the home they have possibly spent their whole life in. So, here are some tips on how to cope with moving to make the move easier on your teen

Let Them Know You Are Moving As Soon As Possible

Many teens have already put down deep roots in their community, whether it’s through friends, activities, school or just a sense of comfort and familiarity. It’s important to tell them as soon as possible so that you can have a conversation as to why the move is the best move for the family. This will give your teen more time to process the news  and work through their emotions.

Keep Them Involved

As for input on what kind of neighborhood they want to live in, and what they want their new room to look like. You can also bring them along on trips to check out potential new homes, which also helps them get more familiar with the area to which your family will eventually move. You might not be able to give them everything they want, but you can find out what’s most important to them and keep it in mind as you look for a new home. This approach helps your older kids feel like they’re not just passive observers and that their needs are respected and considered.

Encourage Them To Maintain Current Friendships

With the use of phone and video calls as well as texting it is easier than ever to stay connected.  Depending on the distance between your new home and your old one, you can also plan future visits or offer your home for a visit from your kid’s friends later on.

Encourage Them To Explore Their New Surroundings

Finding new fun things to do in a new city is one of the best things you can do.  If they play a particular sport find information on the local team that they can join. If they are into music and theater check out the community theater program. But, it doesn’t have to be an activity, it could be a cool coffee shop or a thrift store they can explore and spend time.

Keep Their Belongings Safe

Having an important item like a gaming console or framed, autographed band poster break in transit is sure to start a move on the wrong foot for your kids. Get in touch with the experienced movers and packers at Seattle Movers to make sure that this crucial part of the moving process goes smoothly.
